Lilywhites celebrate after Cup Final shoot-out success
City goalkeeper Zac Barrett made two cup final penalty saves
Cambridge City manager Gary Roberts has hailed his side's determination after winning the Southern League Cup.
The Lilywhites overcame a one goal deficit from the first leg to beat VT FC on penalties at Milton Road.
Roberts told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: "I think it's been a fantastic effort all along in this competition by all the players.
"They've dug in and overall just about shaded it. That's a tremendous effort after the workload we've had lately."
Neil Midgley's 35th minute penalty levelled the scores at 1-1 on aggregate.
It stayed that way through extra-time to set up a tense penalty shoot-out which City won 4-2.
City goalkeeper Zac Barrett made two spot-kick saves and admitted he was delighted with his contribution.
He said: "A clean sheet is always nice in any game and I've got a good record of saving penalties here, so I was always confident I would save a few.
"If I guess the right way nine times out of ten I'll save it."
The Lilywhites are set to embark on a marathon six fixtures - including a Cambs Invitational Cup Final - in ten days as they pursue a Southern Premier play-off place.
Roberts is hoping his players have enough energy left to see them through to the end of the season.
He said: "If we'd have lost tonight it would have been a lot harder to pick the players up after 120 minutes.
"We were down to the bare bones and were trying to help one or two by protecting them.
"To get into the play-offs we probably need three wins, at least, out of the last five league games."
City ended the last campaign with defeat in the play-offs and Barrett is confident they can go one step further this time around.
"We got in the play-offs last year and we've got a better side than we had last year," he said.
