Jersey Combination in quarter-final test against Dorset

Football

The Jersey Combination's National League Systems Cup campaign continues on Saturday when they play the Dorset Premier League in the last eight.

If they get to the final and win that, Jersey will qualify to play in the European version of the competition.

In the last round Jersey beat the Essex Olympian League 1-0, a result that boss John Welsh would like to emulate.

He told BBC Jersey: "If we can produce that kind of performance on Saturday, we'll have every chance to progress."

The National Systems Cup involves football leagues from around England with the winners progressing into the EUFA Systems Cup.

It's been described by the Football Association as "The greatest prize in amateur football."

As Jersey has only one league, the Combination, the selected team will effectively be the best players available in the island.

The main criteria is that no players must have entered into a full-time professional football contract with any club.

It's possible that the final may be held at Wembley, and great rivals Guernsey are also in the quarter-finals, a point not lost of manager Welsh.

"We were speaking about this after the last round, that there's still the potential to play Guernsey at Wembley, and what a fantastic event that would be."

The match is at Springfield Stadium on Saturday, 30 January, with a 1.30pm kick-off.
