Black Country derby ends in draw

Football

League One Walsall held Championship side West Brom to a 2-2 draw in a Black Country derby.

The Saddlers scored two goals in two minutes in the pre-season friendly, as Dwayne Mattis and trialist Matt Richards found the net.

But Luke Moore pulled a goal back and Craig Beattie scored a late penalty for the Baggies to level proceedings.

West Brom supporters outnumbered the home fans in the crowd of 4,358 at the Banks' Stadium.

West Brom manager Roberto Di Matteo told BBC WM: "It's still pre-season so I'm not too concerned about the result to be honest.

"We're still working very hard in between the games so I'm expecting my boys to be sharp."

For Walsall, there was praise for the performance of left-sided trialist Richards.

The 24 year-old former England Under-21 international was released by Ipswich earlier this summer.

And speaking to BBC WM, Saddlers boss Chris Hutchings said he was pleased with the performance: "They're a Championship side who've come down from the Premier League and they've got some quality players out there. I was delighted with the work out."
