Manx youths bow out on penalties

Shoot-out
The Manx side led the penalty shoot-out early on.

The Isle of Man under-18's are out of the FA County Youth Cup after losing their semi-final with Kent in a penalty shoot-out in Douglas on Saturday.

The visitors opened the scoring early on before Ant Moore capitalised on a mistake from the Kent goalkeeper to equalise and force extra-time.

Chris Cannell gave the Manx side the advantage but this time Kent equalised to set up a tense penalty shoot-out.

Despite misses from both sides Kent held their nerve to reach the final.

Despite the disappointment island manager Kevin Manning said he was proud of his young side's performance.

"The lads are bitterly disappointed but I'm very proud of the commitment they gave me," said Manning.

"We've been consistently punching above our weight throughout the competition and we were so close to making the final."

With many of the squad reaching the top of the age bracket, Manning has hinted that several of his young side could make the step up to join the senior Island Games squad.

Next up for the under-18 side will be a friendly with the North Wales League in April.
