SFA to consider radical changes

By Jim Spence

Scottish FA president George Peat
Peat wants action to replace talking on Scottish football's future

Radical proposals to change Scottish football will either be shelved or moved forward when the nation's governing body meets on Wednesday.

Topics being discussed by Scottish FA's professional football committee include league reconstruction.

SFA president George Peat told BBC Scotland: "Every year, the subject of change in Scottish football comes up.

"So it makes sense to thrash things out and either kill them off once and for all - or find a way forward."

Peat unveiled his own blueprint for sweeping changes to Scotland's national sport in December, when he questioned the need for three bodies to run Scottish football.

Scottish football is currently run under the auspices of the SFA, the Scottish Premier League and the Scottish Football League.

The SFA president had also raised the possibility of resurrecting a winter break.

That position appeared to be endorsed this week by the governing body's chief executive Gordon Smith, who has long been an advocate of summer football.

Among the issues being discussed on Wednesday are:

• the viability of three governing bodies continuing to run the game.

• league reconstruction to include a pyramid system

• the potential for improving referee support, performance and technology

• a possible change to the domestic fixture calendar
