Managers call for SPL enlargement

Dundee manager Jocky Scott
Scott agrees with Jefferies that SPL expansion would benefit clubs and fans

Managers Jim Jefferies of Kilmarnock and Jocky Scott of Dundee both hope SPL expansion is a key topic for the SFA's planned review of Scottish football.

SFA president George Peat announced he hopes to set up a consultation process to examine ways of improving the national game.

"I think playing each other four times is wearing a bit thin," said Jefferies.

"I'd like to get back to playing each other twice, it's just a case coming up with the right format."

The Kilmarnock boss added he had sympathy for clubs like St Johnstone, Dunfermline and Dundee who have good stadia and large crowds, but ply their trade in the First Division.

"I know you have to have relegation, but I feel sorry for those sorts of clubs who've had to make cuts and struggle," he added.

"Maybe we should be doing more to help clubs like that, and it would obviously help them if the league was extended.

Scott, boss of First Division Dundee, echoed Jefferies' sentiments, and also advocated a move to summer football.

"Obviously when we see the frustrations we have at the moment summer football is the better idea," said Scott.

"I would also go with a sixteen team SPL, I think it does need a change.

"It would be better going back to two games against each team a season, and then cup ties on top of that.

"I think the fans have now got fed up of seeing four games a season against the same opposition."

SFA president Peat said on Monday that Scottish football will undergo its "biggest and most thorough investigation" to date.

He wants to invite opinion from all areas of the game in Scotland to form a "coalition committee" within the next few weeks.

On the agenda will be various issues including such as the possibility of summer football, league reconstruction and streamlining the three football administrations.
