SPL may bring back winter break

The Scottish weather often plays havoc with SPL fixtures

The Scottish Premier League will consider reintroducing a winter break during season 2010/11.

The 2010 World Cup in South Africa has prohibited the use of such a fixture break for next term.

The SPL board have also announced a Saturday 8 August start date for season 2009/10, with 8/9 May set as the closing weekend of the campaign.

"The possibility of reintroducing the winter break for season 2010/11 is being examined," said an SPL spokesman.

"Season 2009/10 will not include a winter break given the constraints presented by the early finish to the season required by Fifa ahead of the World Cup finals in South Africa."

Scotland's top flight last had a winter break during season 2002/03.

Accommodating a 38-week SPL season as well as cup matches has previously made a winter shutdown unworkable and clubs have cited a loss of revenue as an argument against the break.

MY SPORT: DEBATE

Inclement weather in December and January often causes postponements to matches at all levels of Scottish football.

Six SPL managers recently met with chairman Lex Gold to discuss ways of improving the division and Scottish FA president George Peat wants the country as a whole to consider summer football as an alternative to the current August-May programme.
