Newton Abbot team refuse to play

Football

Newton Abbot are set to face the wrath of the SWPL after their players effectively went on strike on Saturday.

The squad had been due to travel to Wadebridge, but refused to play in a row over unpaid expenses.

"The league were informed at 12.45 via third parties that Newton Abbot AFC, would not be fulfilling the fixture," said an SWPL statement.

"The board have instructed the secretary to issue the prescribed punishment in full," it added.

The statement continued: "Once these charges have been issued to the club a further statement will be made regarding the match in question. The next statement is likely to be issued on Wednesday morning."

The result overshadowed a day when Buckland Athletic took advantage of the sides around them failing to win to go a point clear at the top of the table.

Their 2-0 at Tavistock saw them jump above Ivybridge Town into top spot.

Ivybridge were beaten 3-0 at Plymouth Parkway, who had Chris Wright's hat-trick to thank for the win.
