The writing was on the wall for Harris and Burns after a High Court judge ruled Carlton and Granada were not liable for the 178.5m owed to the League by ITV Digital. They were accused of naivety over the small-print in the court case. The pair also angered club chairman by negotiating the new four-year 95m television deal with BSkyB. Crystal Palace chairman Simon Jordan
"They presided over the demise of the ITV Digital deal, they presided over the demise possibly of the internet deal. "They have taken two court actions - one against Wimbledon and one against ITV Digital - and they've lost both of them and millions of pounds have gone west." "David Burns and Keith Harris have been very, very clever in soliciting an enormous amount of support from the 48 Second and Third Division clubs, which gave him the balance of power in the voting structure of the League. Millwall chairman Theo Paphitis "A lot of the chairmen feel the way this (The ITV Digital court case) was dealt with, knowing full well we did not have a contract that was watertight, was wrong. "We voiced our opinion that other measures should have been taken, which the executive failed to do. "A lot of the chairmen feel this whole issue has not been dealt with in the way we would have wished." Brentford chairman Ron Noades
"Neither Keith nor David were involved in this contract. The problems were with those who were in charge at the time," said Noades. "They will end up looking for another chairman and chief executive and end up with another two people who they will blame for something." York City chairman John Batchelor "I am particularly glad that Keith Harris has gone because I thought he was going to commit an act of corporate cowardice by hanging David Burns out to dry." |
