| Friday, 2 August, 2002, 10:56 GMT 11:56 UK League shake-up threat ![]() Paphitis: Wants more commercial Football League Millwall chairman Theo Paphitis has demanded wholesale changes to the Football League in the wake of the ITV Digital fiasco. The League lost its High Court battle to recover 131.5m from ITV Digital's parent companies Carlton and Granada on Thursday. It emerged that the League had not ensured that Carlton and Granada underwrite the TV deal.
"I will be lobbying very seriously for changes to the Football League," he told BBC Sport Online. "Football has become a very professional business, but the Football League is run by administrators. "We need to get more commercial people in." Paphitis revealed that the clubs had commissioned a special report into changes that could be made to the running of the League. The findings will be discussed by the clubs in the next few weeks. Paphitis says Football League bosses must shoulder much of the blame for the ITV Digital fiasco. But he stopped short of calling for the League to be sued, as York chairman John Batchelor did on Thursday.
But Paphitis criticised Football League chief executive David Burns. "The problem with David is that he hasn't got a feel for his membership," he said. "And he was totally wrong to agree the new deal with Sky, which will mean the clubs losing money every year for four years." |
