Gascoigne set for US move
Paul Gascoigne is available on a free transfer
Gascoigne is available on a free transfer
Paul Gascoigne has agreed a deal to join American Major League Soccer side DC United.

Gascoigne's agent Ian Elliot told BBC Five Live that the former England international would join the Washington side.

He said: "A deal is on and we fly to DC tomorrow."

Elliot said Gascoigne would train with the side three times and watch them play before making up his mind on the move next Wednesday.

"He will train with them on Friday, watch them on Saturday and train again on Monday and Tuesday before making a decision on Wednesday.

"He's always wanted to play in the States and it's a standard of football he will be comfortable in," Elliot said.

The 35-year-old had been targeted by the coach of DC United, Ray Hudson, when he was in charge of the now defunct Miami Fusion.

Gascoigne was available on a free transfer after leaving English Division One side Burnley who he joined from Everton at the end of last season.

Elliot said Gascoigne would need a couple of weeks of training to get match-fit and was hoping to play in the six or seven games of the season and from the start of the 2003 season.

Gascoigne also played for Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur, Italian club Lazio, Scottish club Rangers and Middlesbrough.

If he did make the move to the United States he would replicate the example of Pele, George Best and Franz Beckenbauer who went Stateside at the end of their careers.
