Truro-based fencer Teresa Norejko has been awarded a place on a national mentoring scheme for young athletes.

The 16-year-old was nominated for the IeXcel Youth Sports Trust scheme by the British Fencing Association.

Norejko received the nomination following a promising season competing for both Great Britain and Wales in fencing events throughout Europe.

IeXcel helps young athletes, who are still at school, balance the demands of their sport with their academic work.

Norejko has chosen her biology teacher at Truro School Michelle Sharp to be her mentor with the IeXcel scheme.

Sharp said: "Teresa has great potential and it's really important that we give her the support she needs to perform well in both her sporting events and academic studies.

"We will be meeting at least twice each term specifically to discuss how she is coping with the demands on her time and trying to ease any problems she may be encountering.

"Hopefully, with continued support and collaboration, she will go on to achieve even greater success."
