Women's Test match, Scarborough, day one: New Zealand 215; England 1-0 (at close) New Zealand captain Maia Lewis was run out for 17 |
England's women produced an excellent performance in the field to dismiss New Zealand for 215 in their first Test meeting since 1996.
Lucy Pearson, Jenny Gunn and Isa Guha claimed two wickets each, but it was debutant Kathryn Brunt who accounted for top scorer Rebecca Rolls.
She batted for two and a quarter hours for her 71 after Paula Flannery had launched the innings with 46.
England's openers survived two overs before the close, reaching 1-0.
New Zealand made a solid enough start after a delayed start because of rain as their openers, Flannery and Maria Fahey, shared a stand of 49
Guha made the breakthrough when Fahey was caught by Arran Brindle for 19 and Flannery's dismissal, lbw to Connor, began a slump which saw the White Ferns go from 91-2 to 216-6.
Skipper Maia Lewis (17) and Haidee Tiffen (14) both found it difficult to penetrate a well-set field and it was left to Rolls, making her Test debut after 78 one-day appearances, to halt the decline.
Nicola Browne helped add 63 for the seventh wicket before she fell to Pearson for 23 and Rolls became the day's fifth lbw victim six runs later after a 116-ball innings which included nine fours.
Laura Newton was involved the last two wickets, taking catches to remove Louise Milliken and Rebecca Steele, with Pearson (2-51 from 22 overs) and Gunn the successful bowlers.
