England scored a mediocre 144-9 in their 50 overs, with Rosalie Birch top-scoring with an unbeaten 46.
Spinner Rebecca Steele recorded career-best figures, taking 3-10 in an extremely economical 10 over spell to thwart England's challenge.
NZ made hard work of their run chase but eventually won with nine balls to spare, Rebecca Rolls hitting 42.
