The death of former Indian leg-spinner Subhash 'Fergie' Gupte has overshadowed final preparations for Saturday's vital match in Port of Spain.

Gupte took 149 wickets in 30 Tests between 1952 and 1961 but later made his home in Trinidad, so there is reason for both teams to pay tribute to his memory.

"He had not been keeping well for the past month, he was suffering from diabetes.

"Maybe he wanted his spirit to travel back to India with the team," said Gupte's brother, Balu, who also played Test cricket.

The game itself offers India the chance to obtain consolation for their 2-1 defeat in the Test series.

Victory in Barbados following the wash-out of last weekend's double-header means Sourav Ganguly's side can wrap up the series at the Queen's Park Oval with only the final match of their tour to come.

Ganguly was delighted by the all-round effort of his side in Barbados, where they cruised home by seven wickets after bowling out West Indies for just 186.

"When you play that way, more often than not, you are going to win," he commented.

India are unlikely to make many changed to their line-up, while West Indies will pick from an unchanged 13-man squad.

Home skipper Carl Hooper admitted his team were caught out by a number of new faces in the Indian side in Barbados.

Virender Sehwag, Dinesh Mongia, Yuvraj Singh, Mohammed Kaif and Tinu Yohannan did not play in the Test series and were eager to do well with the World Cup in South Africa now only nine months away.

"We thought we knew a thing or two about the opposition, having played five Tests in two months, but we were in for a big surprise," said Hooper.

Their batting line-up will remain intact but they could alter their bowling attack by bringing in left-arm paceman Pedro Collins or giving off-spinner Gareth Breese his first opportunity.
