ICC Champions Trophy, Colombo: Sri Lanka 201-2 (36.1 ovs) beat Pakistan 200 all out (49.4 ovs)

Sanath Jayasuriya showed his tremendous batting skill to hit his 13th one-day century as host nation Sri Lanka destroyed Pakistan in the opening Champions Trophy fixture.

Sri Lankan openers Jayasuriya and Marvan Atapattu put on 44 in seven overs before Atapattu was run out by Abdur Razzaq's direct hit from mid-on as he attempted a quick single.

Wasim Akram then gained reward for a testing new ball spell when he pinned Kumar Sangakkara on the crease and had him lbw for nought.

But that was to be the last success for the touring side, as Jayasuriya (102 not out) and the experienced Aravinda de Silva (66 not out) steered Sri Lanka to victory in the 37th over.

Muttiah Muralitharan and Dilhara Fernando had earlier taken three wickets each as Pakistan managed to scrape to 200 with the help of an innings of 52 by Saeed Anwar.

Historic dismissal

The visitors initally slumped to 17 for three, and one of the early casualties was Shoaib Malik who became the first lbw victim of the third umpire.

Then Anwar and Younis Khan (35) staged a brief recovery with a 70-run partnership for the fourth wicket.

But when both men were out it left Pakistan in serious trouble. Misbah-ul-Haq was the last man to fall, bowled by a Fernando yorker for an encouraging 47 from the fourth ball of the final over.

Shoaib's dismissal came in the early collapse which hardly vindicated Pakistan skipper Waqar Younis's decision to bat first on winning the toss.

He had been hit on the pads by left-arm paceman Chaminda Vaas bowling.

Umpire Daryl Harper referred the decision to television umpire Rudi Koertzen who decided the ball had been in line with the stumps.

Under experimental regulations in force for the one-day tournament, field umpires can refer any decision, including lbws and bat-pad catches, to the third umpire.

Pakistan started without vice captain Inzamam-ul-Haq, ruled out because of a heel injury and replaced by Misbah.

Opener Shahid Afridi was the first to go, edging an attempted drive against a rising ball from Pulasthi Gunaratne.

Shoaib fell next and two balls later Yousuf Youhana was run out for a second ball duck after a comical mix-up with Anwar.
