| Waugh axed from one-day squad Waugh is Australia's leading one-day run-scorer Mark Waugh has been left out of Australia's one-day squad to play South Africa and Zimbabwe. Waugh's twin brother Steve was axed from the side last month, which means that it will be the first time in 16 years that neither will be part of an Australian one-day team. Twenty-year-olds Nathan Hauritz and Shane Watson were both called into the expanded 15-man squad. Queensland batsmen Matthew Hayden and Jimmy Maher are both recalled while Shane Warne, whose position had been thought to be in doubt, keeps his place.
Younger twin Mark is Australia's highest run scorer in one-day cricket with 8,500 in 244 matches, including 18 centuries - a figure double that of any other Australian batsman. Chairman of the selectors Trevor Hohns paid tribute to his record but said Australia wanted to bring in some younger players in preparation for next year's World Cup. "Mark has been an outstanding player for Australia at the one-day level - one of our finest - which made the decision to leave him out of this squad a difficult one. "However, given the enviable depth of talented cricketers around the country, we feel that the time is now right to introduce the next generation of players into the side. "We think we have chosen a squad that has a good mix of youth and experience and giving the side a chance to play together in South Africa and Zimbabwe will prepare it well for next year's World Cup."
Watson hit a century on debut for Australia in a tour match against South Africa A on Sunday. Opener Hayden returned to the squad after being dropped midway through the recent tri-series in Australia that included New Zealand and South Africa. Maher is back in the one-day squad for the first time since 1997-98 after dominating this season's domestic first-class competitions. The Waughs, Justin Langer and Stuart MacGill are the members of the touring party in South Africa who will return to Australia at the end of the three-Test series. The Australian one-day squad: Ricky Ponting (captain), Adam Gilchrist (vice-captain), Jason Gillespie, Matthew Hayden, Darren Lehmann, Michael Bevan, Shane Watson, Damien Martyn, Jimmy Maher, Ian Harvey, Shane Warne, Brett Lee, Andy Bichel, Glenn McGrath, Nathan Hauritz. |
