Waugh delight as Aussies power on
Shaun Pollock is dismissed as Australia storm towards victory

Australia captain Steve Waugh paid tribute to an outstanding all-round display by his team after they crushed South Africa in the first Test in Adelaide.

The home side won by 246 runs and now have the upperhand in the three-match series that is being billed as cricket's unofficial world championship.

Waugh was hugely impressed with his side's batting performance after they recorded scores of 439 and 309.

We had to work hard today and I thought our bowling was outstanding
Steve Waugh,
Australia captain
"They're not playing many loose shots at the moment," said Waugh.

"Matty Hayden's century in the second innings was an outstanding knock and set us up. It gave us plenty of time to bowl South Africa out."

South Africa's second-innings wickets were shared between Australia's four leading bowlers, but man-of-the-match Shane Warne got special praise.

"It was certainly a good team effort. We had to work hard today and I thought our bowling was outstanding," said Waugh.

"It's always hard to bat last on this wicket, it's a bit up and down, and Shane was always going to be hard to play on the last couple of days turning it out of the rough."

Brett Lee's short-pitched balls at South Africa's tail-end batsmen Tuesday also received the Waugh seal of approval.

Lee, regarded as the world's fastest bowler, fired in four short-pitched deliveries in one over at South African No.10 Makhaya Ntini and No.11 Nantie Hayward in the first innings.

Two of the balls slammed into Ntini's helmet, but Lee wasn't warned by Australian umpire Simon Taufel.

And Waugh said: "It's Test match cricket - when Brett goes into bat he's going to cop it.

"These days you're earning big money, you have a responsibility to learn how to bat.

"It's not like 20 years ago when there was a bowler's code."
