Australia's bowlers guided them to a stunning 246-run win over South Africa in the first Test in Adelaide.

South Africa's batting line-up capitulated on the final day to a combination of pace and spin as they were dismissed for 128.

Glenn McGrath claimed three for 13, Jason Gillespie two for 23, Shane Warne three for 57 and Brett Lee finished off the tail with two for 29.

Australia had set the tourists 375 to win the opening Test of a series which will decide who is the best side in Test cricket.

But after comprehensively outplaying South Africa over the course of the contest, Australia will feel comfortable that they can remain the number one side in the world.

McKenzie offered no shot

Resuming on 17 for two, South Africa's only hope lay in batting all day, but they were soon staring defeat in the face after a Glenn McGrath double strike.

The New South Wales paceman removed Boeta Dippenaar and Neil McKenzie in the space of three balls to leave the tourists reeling.

Dippenaar went without scoring when he guided a delivery from McGrath to Shane Warne at first slip.

McKenzie, who made 87 in the first innings, followed two balls later also for no score.

He offered no shot to a ball that jagged back off the seam and was unlucky to be adjudged lbw with the ball seemingly heading over the top of off-stump.

South Africa had slumped to 21 for four and the match was all but up before Jacques Kallis and Lance Klusener steadied the ship.

The pair added 33 before Klusener, who had looked out of sorts in reaching 18, edged Jason Gillespie to Warne at first slip to give the fast bowler his first wicket in the match.

It was soon two, when Mark Boucher gloved a leg-side catch to wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist.

Shaun Pollock joined Kallis, but Warne, who had extracted sharp turn from the pitch soon removed the South African captain.

He prodded a bat-pad to silly point where Ricky Ponting reacted quickly to claim a one-handed catch.

Late stands

Claude Henderson, who made three, failed to add to his score after the lunch interval with the Warne-Ponting combination teaming up to snaffle his wicket.

The relentless march to victory was delayed by a stubborn 39-run partnership between Kallis and Makhaya Ntini.

Ntini's reslience allowed Kallis to make a well-deserved half-century, but Brett Lee ended the tailender's resistance.

Nantie Hayward further frustrated the Australian bowlers for a spell, but he was only delaying the inevitiable.

The end came when Hayward edged Lee behind, leaving Kallis stranded on 65 not out.
