Woolmer faces up to probable loss

We are looking for players to bat for two days in Test matches just like Jayasuriya did

Pakistan coach Bob Woolmer admits his side are staring up the barrel in the first Test against Sri Lanka.

They need 314 further runs for victory with just six wickets remaining.

Coaching Pakistan in a home Test match for the first time, Woolmer said: "It's going to be tough work to save the game but we will have a go.

"We've had enough bad sessions to be on the wrong side of this game. Our batting was disappointing in the first innings to say the least."

Sanath Jayasuriya scored a masterful 253 to take Sri Lanka to 438 in their second innings to establish a commanding 417 run lead.

Dilhara Fernando then reduced Pakistan to 114-4 at stumps on day four.

Woolmer said: "We are looking for players to bat for two days in Test matches just like Jayasuriya did and score 250 which takes the game away."

The English-born coach added that a hectic schedule of one-day cricket combined with not playing any four-day domestic matches had caused his team some difficult.

"This is our first Test since April," he added.

"I like to see more Test matches in the general program so you are not always just playing 15 one-day internationals and no Test matches.

"Surely there should be three or four Test matches and then five one-day internationals so that players can alternate better," Woolmer suggested.

Meanwhile, Jayasuriya is keeping his fingers crossed for six more wickets on Sunday.

He said: "I hope my innings helps us win this Test match because all of us want to show everyone Sri Lanka is a team capable of winning abroad.

"I have never thought about individual landmarks but getting such a score obviously is very pleasing."

"It is always important for me when I get runs outside Sri Lanka but I am satisfied today because I scored runs when my team needed it the most."
