Woakes finished the first day with figures of 4-26

Warwickshire seamer Chris Woakes took an impressive 4-26 as England Lions dominated a rain-hit opening to their four-day game with West Indies.

Devon Smith pulled Saj Mahmood's first delivery for four but only 18 more were possible before tea and in that time Woakes had Lendl Simmons caught behind.

Tim Ambrose also pouched Smith before Denesh Ramdin was caught by Ian Bell to leave the tourists struggling on 34-3.

Ramnaresh Sarwan hit six boundaries but fell for 31 as they limped to 76-4.

Woakes, 20, topped Warwickshire's bowling averages in his first season last year and has been tipped to play for the England first team by Bears bowling coach Allan Donald.

And he did his prospects no harm by removing Simmons, who had already been dropped by Samit Patel off Mahmood, for four.

That proved to be the last action of the morning session while the afternoon was washed out by the persistent rain.

And the tourists hopes of prolonged batting practice for their top order were shattered by Woakes who dismissed Smith in similar fashion to Simmons - both pushing forward on the front foot.

Ramdin's stay was equally short as he edged a defensive shot off the back foot to Bell at third slip to depart for four.

Sarwan looked more assured and stroked Woakes for two boundaries in the same over, but he chased a wider delivery off the final ball and was caught by Samit Patel at second slip.

Shivnarine Chanderpaul steadied the innings with an unbeaten 15 in the next 12 overs and with the help of Brendon Nash, guided the tourists from 55-4 to the close without further loss.
