Chris Woakes hopes to put the West Indies on the back foot at Derby. |
Warwickshire's Chris Woakes is hoping a good performance for England Lions against the West Indies at Derby this week will impress the Test selectors. "Anyone who's played as a youngster wants to play Test cricket," he said. "This is a chance for me. And hopefully I can get in the Test team eventually. "We want to put the West Indies on the back foot before the Test match. "This is a chance to shine and get your name in the door. People are going to get a chance in this England set-up." Walmley boy Woakes topped the Warwickshire bowling averages in his first season last year, taking 42 wickets at an average of 20.57. And he has already been tipped for the full England side by his Warwickshire bowling coach, Bears legend Allan Donald, who took more than 300 Test wickets for South Africa. "It gives you a confidence boost when a legend of the game is saying that about you," Woakes told BBC Midlands Today. "The things he says are always going to sink in. "I just need to keep my feet on the ground. "The last 12 months have been a bit of a shock to me, a bit unexpected. "Hopefully I can keep going the right way. I've had a taste of playing for England with the Under-19s and this is the next step."
