FRIENDS PROVIDENT TROPHY, GROUP C, Headingley Yorkshire 227-5 beat Sussex 213 by 14 runs(Yorks 2pts, Sussex 0pts)
Michael Vaughan hit his highest score for Yorkshire since September 2007 |
Michael Vaughan found form with 82 as Yorkshire held on for a 14-run FP Trophy win over Sussex at Headingley. The former England captain put on a match-winning 117 for the fourth wicket with wicketkeeper Gerard Brophy (68 not out) as Yorkshire ran up 227-5. Luke Wright (46) and Murray Goodwin (45) rescued Sussex from 42-3 in reply. But another England hopeful, Tim Bresnan, had Goodwin caught behind, adding a further scalp to finish with 4-35 and help bowl out Sussex for 213. Vaughan at last found the sort of form that could earn him an England in a near faultless innings as the home season began at Headingley. On a two-paced pitch well exploited by the Sussex seamers, Vaughan was strong in defence and quick to attack as he helped Yorkshire recover from a parlous 31-3. Forced to adopt a cautious approach early on, his patience was suitably rewarded and as well as stroking four fours over the newly-laid, spongy outfield, he also hit three perfectly-timed sixes. His first half century of the season came off 87 balls with four fours and a six and he eventually fell to his 116th delivery after his stand with the in-form Brophy, who went on to snare five victims behind the stumps - a Yorkshire record in the competition. It was Vaughan's highest score for Yorkshire in any competition since making 95 against Derbyshire in the final NatWest Pro40 match of the 2007 season.
