Gough could make Ashes trip
Graham Thorpe
Thorpe has taken a complete break from cricket
Leading fast bowler Darren Gough is likely to be named in England's Ashes touring party on Tuesday, subject to his recovery from a knee injury.

And Graham Thorpe is favoured for a spot in the squad despite not having played cricket for over two months, after he took a complete break from the game because of personal problems.

It's my belief we've got to hit them with pace if we can
David Graveney

England's four-man selection panel, including coach Duncan Fletcher and captain Nasser Hussain met at the end of the fourth Test against India.

But chairman of selectors David Graveney has already had a meeting with Thorpe and says his is impressed with what the batsman had to say.

"Personally I was pleased with his attitude," he told BBC Radio Five Live

"But it's the responsibility of all four of us, and more importantly the captain and coach, who have to manage him through what is going to be a hard winter."

Thorpe flew home from England's tour of India last winter on the morning of the second Test following the break-up of his marriage.

Gough missed that tour claiming he needed a break, but has not played Test cricket since, after injuring his knee during the one-day series in New Zealand in March.

Gough has struggled with a knee injury
A return during the one-day NatWest Series in June brought six wickets for England, but he suffered a recurrence shortly afterwards and is still undergoing rehabilitation.

England play their first match of a five-Test tour in Perth on 22 October.

"Every pundit who has written today has said that Darren Gough and Graham Thorpe are crucial," Graveney said in the Sunday morning interview.

"The team will be named subject to fitness: Andrew Flintoff has had an operation, Darren has got rehab to do and Simon Jones is currently unfit."

And Graveney was in no doubt that England must favour pace bowlers in what is expected to be a 17-man squad.

"As a result of injury this summer we've had a chance to see Simon Jones and Steve Harmison play and that is the best route to win."
