| Indians on a high ![]() India celebrate their biggest ever Test win Former England captain Tony Greig has praised India's performance following their innings victory in the Headingley Test. Greig believes the game was "one of the high points of their cricketing history" and much of the credit should go to skipper Sourav Ganguly. Writing for the Indian Express, Greig said: "Since taking over the leadership of the side in 2000, Ganguly has recorded four overseas wins - twice as many as what was achieved in the previous decade. "With a young and talented unit under his command, Ganguly leads a formidable unit in both forms of the game." India have been given a further boost with some of their key players making advances in the latest Test rankings.
Sachin Tendulkar's 193 - the 30th century of his Test career - has resulted in him moving up three places to second behind Australia's Adam Gilchrist in the PricewaterhouseCoopers list. And vice-captain Rahul Dravid, whose 148 was crucial in laying the foundation for India's massive first innings total, has risen six places to 12th. Leg-spinner Anil Kumble took four wickets on the final day, including the vital ones of Nasser Hussain and Alec Stewart, and he has risen two places to sixth in the bowling list. Praise has been lavished on the team by the Indian media with The Statesman carrying the headline: "Sourav's boys break foreign jinx in style." Former Test off-spinner Erapalli Prasanna said the result was "perhaps India's best win abroad". He added: "The win was more significant because the players had been under tremendous pressure due to the contracts row with the International Cricket Council and their own national board. "But they put that behind them and came out on top." PWC batting rankings 1 A Gilchrist (Aus) 881 pts PWC bowling rankings 1 G McGrath (Aus) 908 |
