Scarborough Cricket Club have been in existence since 1849

Yorkshire have offered a deal to Scarborough Cricket Club to continue playing 10 days of first-class cricket a year for the next decade.

The deal is subject to Scarborough making a number of improvements to their North Marine Road ground.

Yorkshire chief executive Stuart Regan told BBC Radio York: "We've worked hard with Scarborough Council and the tourist authorities."

Scarborough chairman Bill Mustoe added: "It's great for the club and the town."

The length of the deal is twice as long as previous agreements and Mustoe said that is very important.

"This gives us the opportunity to work with sponsors and people who might like to invest in the ground," he added.

"You can do that with a long-term agreement, you have a much better chance of securing finance.

"We are very hopeful that we will be able to announce shortly, a really interesting finance package with Yorkshire.com [the official Yorkshire tourism website]."

Regan explained the areas Yorkshire expect to see improved at North Marine Road.

"Lots of customer areas, seating, toilets and so on, our media facilities and also the press facilities," he said.

"Scarborough is the largest fixed-seating cricket ground outside Test match grounds," Mustoe added. "But it takes a huge amount to keep it maintained.

"What this [deal] allows us to do is to start a programme of improving facilities for all the spectators who come, to make it a really great place to come and watch cricket.

"The ground has a unique atmosphere. People love to watch cricket at Scarborough because they're very close to the action.

"We want to give people the modern-day facilities but not lose the ground's character."
