Herschelle Gibbs has made 20 Twenty20 appearances for South Africa |
Yorkshire have made their third overseas signing of the winter by signing Herschelle Gibbs for this summer's Twenty20. The vastly-experienced South African Test opener, 35, had short spells with Glamorgan in 2008 and 2009. By moving to Headingley, Gibbs becomes the second of four overseas players permitted to be registered for the T20. Yorkshire's other overseas signing for this summer's competition is Australian all-rounder Ryan Harris. The Tykes have also signed New Zealand's Daryl Tuffey to cover for Harris' early-season absence. | I have very good memories of Headingley as I got my first World Cup hundred there in 1999 |
Gibbs is scheduled to miss Yorkshire's first two Twenty20 games against Derbyshire and Worcestershire. But he is then set to join up with Martyn Moxon's men in time for the game against Durham on 10 June and will be available for the rest of the 16-match qualifying group. "I've always enjoyed playing cricket in the UK," said Gibbs, who has hit 1,627 runs in 71 Twenty20 matches at an average of 25.83. "I have very good memories of Headingley as I got my first World Cup hundred there in 1999. "I'm really looking forward to playing over there and I'll hopefully help to lead the troops towards some sort of success. I hope we'll have some good weather."
