Yorkshire confirm Andrew Gale as new captain

A dream come true - Gale

Yorkshire have confirmed batsman Andrew Gale as the county's new captain.

The 26-year-old left-hander, who becomes Yorkshire's sixth captain in 10 years, takes over from Anthony McGrath, who stood down from the role on Monday.

Gale was named the club's player of the year in 2009, scoring 828 first-class runs and 689 in limited overs matches.

He will take charge of a side which has narrowly avoided relegation from Division One of the County Championship in three of the last four seasons.

McGrath resigned to improve form

But although Yorkshire struggled last summer, finishing seventh in the County Championship, Gale's form earned him an England Lions debut against Australia in August and selection to the 'B category' of this winter's England Performance Programme.

He captained the EPP side to victory over Nashua Titans in the final match of their tour to South Africa, which ended last week.
