Herschelle Gibbs first played for Glamorgan in 2008 |
Herschelle Gibbs says he would like to continue as an overseas player for Glamorgan next season. The South Africa opener revealed he had already had preliminary discussions with Glamorgan director of cricket Matthew Maynard about his future. "I've spoken to Matthew and they are very keen for me to come back and I'm very keen too," Gibbs said. "The people have been fantastic here and I love playing for them and there's no reason for me not to come back." Gibbs, 35, first arrived in Cardiff in 2008 for Glamorgan's Twenty20 Cup campaign and returned this season after his first taste of life at the Welsh county. Commitments to South Africa and the Deccan Chargers - helping them to win the Indian Premier League - meant Gibbs was only able to arrive at the Swalec Stadium at the start of July. | There's a really good buzz in the squad |
"That's the unfortunate thing, there is such a lot of cricket to be played these days," said Gibbs, who has played 90 Tests and 227 one-day internationals for South Africa. "If I could have come at the beginning of the season I would love to have, but just due to the nature of the schedule it looks like it's impossible to come for the whole season. "But I'll definitely come here as long as I possibly can if I come back next year." Glamorgan slumped in limited overs competitions this season, but are well placed to make a late charge for the promotion places out of County Championship Division Two. | 606: DEBATE |
A win away at Northamptonshire in the match that starts on Wednesday would see Glamorgan overtake their rivals and also move above Gloucestershire and Essex into third place. Depending on bonus points gained Glamorgan could even claim second from Derbyshire, although first they must win at the County Ground. "We've got quite good momentum, we've won our last four-day games [against Middlesex and before that Leicestershire] and there's a really good buzz in the squad," Gibbs added. "Hopefully that momentum can stay right until the end [of the season]."
