Peters century thwarts Glamorgan

COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION TWO, Northampton:
CLOSE OF PLAY, DAY ONE: Northants 224-4
(Northants 1pt, Glamorgan 1pt)
26-29 August 2009

Stephen Peters
Opener Stephen Peters hit 18 boundaries in his unbeaten 124

A century from Northants opener Stephen Peters lit up a rain-affected first day of their game with Glamorgan.

The home side reached 224-4 before the heavens opened, with Peters ending the day still at the crease on 124 not out.

His effort helped Northants recover from an awful start, in which they lost two wickets in the first six overs.

Peters shared an unbeaten fifth-wicket stand of 126 runs with South African Andrew Hall as Glamorgan's bowlers failed to build on their early success.

Glamorgan captain Jamie Dalrymple's decision to bowl first brought instant rewards when Rob White was brilliantly caught for a duck at silly mid-on by Gareth Rees off the bowling of James Harris.

Alex Wakely made only five before he was bowled by Garnett Kruger, leaving Northants reeling on 16-2.

Riki Wessels made 39 off just 36 balls before edging a Jim Allenby delivery behind to wicketkeeper Mark Wallace.

The only black mark on Peters' otherwise brilliant innings was when he inadvertently helped dismiss his skipper Nicky Boje in a freak run out for five.

Peters hit Harris for a perfect straight drive, but the bowler reacted quickly to deflect the ball onto the stumps, leaving Boje stranded out of his crease.

The rain was a constant threat throughout, and the players did not return to the field after being forced off at 1500 BST, with only 52 of the scheduled 96 overs being bowled on the first day.
