David Leatherdale took over as chief executive at New Road in October |
Worcestershire have announced a profit of £103,000 for the 2010 season following promotion back to Division One in the County Championship. The successful financial results were also helped by economising at New Road. "Reductions in expenditure have given the club a stronger base," said new chief executive David Leatherdale. "There were reductions in most income streams during 2010 and some difficult decisions and sacrifices have had to be made, both on and off the field." "Twenty20 ticket sales were hit particularly heavily during June and July due to the World Cup." Worcestershire have made further cuts in order to make three overseas signings for the 2011 season. Australian all-rounder Damien Wright will be their overseas player form the first half of the season before being replaced by Pakistan off-spinner Saeed Ajmal. And Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has agreed to return for Worcestershire's FP t20 campaign. But, apart from former skipper Vikram Solanki and veteran seamers Matt Mason and Alan Richardson, it will be an otherwise young side that Daryl Mitchell leads into battle next summer. "The club has a long history with a loyal following and it is evident that the development of younger players is of key importance to members and supporters," added Leatherdale. "The last few seasons have been up and down and, while the economic climate is likely to be difficult going forward, it is vital we ensure the club has a future which is both viable and sustainable. "Division One cricket will test the squad and retaining this status beyond 2011 will be a major achievement."
