Mitchell took over from Gareth Batty as vice-captain |
Worcestershire director of cricket Steve Rhodes says vice-captain Daryl Mitchell is something of an unsung hero at the club. While Alexei Kervezee grabbed the headlines with a career best 155 at Derby, Rhodes was keen to highlight Mitchell's recent efforts with the bat. "It was great for Alexei to get that hundred and his career best," he told BBC Hereford and Worcester. "But I would like to single out Daryl. I think he has been awesome." Mitchell followed up a five-and-a-half hour 71 against Derbyshire with 72 in the Clydesdale Bank 40 defeat by Unicorns. Rhodes says the 26-year-old has proved he can bat in the four-day and one-day formats. "His score of 71 at Derby was a fantastic knock, not just stone-walling the bowlers, he played good cricket. "On Sunday again he got us out of jail, he ended up playing an opening role and made a wonderful 70. "On another day he could have had a hundred but he's been a revelation." Rhodes also denied suggestions that wicketkeeper Ben Scott would be returning to New Road. Scott impressed while on loan from Middlesex earlier in the season while young keeper Ben Cox was completing his exams. But Rhodes says they are not looking at another loan for Scott; "Ben Cox is a professional on our staff and at this stage we are happy with the way things are."
