Ben Smith top scored for Worcester in this week's Twenty20 win at Bristol |
We have a few days off over the weekend and, after a hectic 11 days of Twenty20 cricket, it means we can relax and enjoy a bit of rehab. Some supporters might think that sounds strange as we've only been playing 20 overs-a-side cricket. It may not seem tiring, but trust me it is. Even though it's only 20 overs in the field and 20 with the bat, because the games start so late your body is on the go all day. We have a window of two or three days when we won't train or play but let out bodies recover. We can then come back and practise for the four-day game next Thursday (11 June) when we play our next Championship match against Sussex at New Road. It has been a good week for us. If we wanted anything to come out of the campaign, it would have been to get three wins, so we will be on a high going into the second stage of the competition. I would have liked to have gone on with Twenty 20 and finish the group off. But we knew what the fixtures were at the start of the season, and we now have two Championship games before we get back to Twenty 20. We lost two games and you are going to lose a game quite badly at times, and can be on the wrong end of a result when you think you can win. We didn't take a couple of early chances against Warwickshire, a catch and a run-out, but we worked hard and we could not complain about losing that one. We should have beaten Northants, but they took it away from us with one innings really from Johannes van der Wath. | I have been pleased with the way we have been fielding. I have been pleased with the way we have been fielding. The lads have embraced the energy you need for Twenty 20 cricket. You can field well for 20 overs but just one or two errors, and they could be wicket-taking errors, two's turned into threes and ones turned into twos can cost you. It can all be addressed and we all know the old phrase, catches can win matches. It was nice for me to get a couple of good knocks. It's strange Twenty 20 cricket, as I haven't done anything different when I got runs, to the games when I didn't. I still went out with the same game plan. This is where confidence comes into it, if you get away and get a score you feel you can do it again and again. We had our first benefit game of the season at Belbroughton this week and what a great night out it was. All the lads enjoyed the game, and we had a really good crowd thanks to the hard work the club had put in. It was good to see all ages, from the junior section to the golden oldies who were there enjoying the occasion. The great thing about these games is that anyone can come along. Events we have coming up are a Golf Day at Sapey, the Asparagus Supper, the Summer Ball. There are lots of events on the horizon so it's getting very busy and you can get all the details on my website (www.bensmithbenefit.com). Ben Smith was talking to BBC Hereford and Worcester's Dave Bradley.
