Steve Rhodes has been looking for an overseas fast bowler |
Worcestershire have offered a two-year contract to Imran Arif after he took seven wickets on his first-class debut. Pakistan-born Arif is currently playing as an overseas player and will have to obtain a British passport as part of the deal. Having played second team cricket for several counties the 24-year-old paceman took five wickets in the first innings against Glamorgan. "It's a dream come true, I feel like I'm at home at Worcester," said Arif. Worcstershire have been looking for an overseas player since both Fidel Edwards and Ashish Nehra rejected moves to New Road and director of cricket Steve Rhodes told BBC Hereford and Worcester his search for a bowler might be over. "It's hard calling Imran an overseas player because people think they should be world beaters, but if he carries on bowling like that then he will be." Rhodes also revealed that other teams were interested in securing Arif's signature: "There have been a few questions from other clubs, even Glamorgan have been been asking about him during this game. "I'm delighted he has signed and the ball is now in his court to get himself a British passport." Worcestershire's next County Championship game is against Middlesex at Lords starting on Tuesday. There will be full ball-by-ball commentary on the game on BBC Hereford and Worcester on 738AM and online at bbc.co.uk/herefordandworcester.
