Kirtley (right) took three wickets in his final match for Sussex |
James Kirtley says Sussex have a bright future ahead of them despite the retirement of two key players. Saturday's CB 40 match against Surrey, was the seamer's last match for the county, while all-rounder Robin Martin-Jenkins bowed out earlier this year. He told BBC Sussex: "The side should win another trophy in the next couple of weeks without us. It shows what a good place the club is in. "It's in no way the end of an era for Sussex County Cricket Club as a team." He added: "It's been a special decade. There are records that we've set during the time that will be broken. "To be involved in the first Championship-winning side will always be held very dearly to the heart. "I'm sure with the players we've got and the support some more Championship wins won't be far away." Kirtley took 3-61 on his final one-day appearance for Sussex, his last wicket being the prize scalp of Kevin Pietersen. "Luckily enough it squeezed under. It was a great one to sign off with and a memorable one," he said. "It was an exciting game to finish on. It was a shame we didn't scrape across the line but results didn't go with us. "It's a sad day. I love playing here."
