James Kirtley, man of the match on his Test debut, said it was by bowling in a "boring" style that he wreaked such havoc on South Africa's batsmen in the third Test.
Kirtley had to wait until the sixth of eight matches to make his debut despite being named in the squad for every single Test this summer.
But he grabbed his opportunity by taking six wickets in the second innings, and eight in the match.
Kirtley said: "The instructions were pretty simple. I had to keep it boring and keep bowling in the right areas.
"It's fantastic to be part of an England win although it hasn't really sunk in yet.
"I'm sure when I get back into the dressing-room I'll realise how big a game this was."
But Kirtley was keen to share the success of the moment with his new team-mates.
"The team performed brilliantly in this game, and we just need to take the discipline we showed here into the Headingley Test," he said, looking forward to Thursday's fourth Test.
Michael Vaughan, reflecting on his first Test victory as England captain, paid tribute to the two England batsmen who provided the platform for victory as far back as Thursday. "The game was really set up by Nasser [Hussain's] and [Mark] Butcher's hundreds in the first innings," said Vaughan.
"It was a good toss to win - to get 445 really set the tone for us.
"I thought we bowled superbly last night when there was a little bit of uneven bounce and the boys exploited the conditions well."
