James Anderson celebrates the prized wicket of Neil McKenzie

England's James Anderson took five wickets in the day - but South Africa claimed the moral victory with a fighting display in Nottingham.

Resuming on 84-2, the tourists were deep in trouble after losing Jacques Rudolph and Boeta Dippenaar in the first over of the day.

But a sixth-wicket stand of 129 by Neil McKenzie (90) and Mark Boucher (48) gave the tourists hope before Shaun Pollock hit a splendid 62 to further negate England's advantage.

It got worse for the home side when Marcus Trescothick was dismissed by Pollock late in the day, although the Somerset left-hander was extremely unlucky to be given out.

Day three: Action as it happened

But Michael Vaughan's side still hold an 83-run lead with nine second-innings wickets left - and remain in the driving seat with two days still to go.

England began the day well, with James Kirtley claiming his first Test victim when he had Rudolph (15) caught behind by Alec Stewart.

The Sussex seamer then had Dippenaar trapped lbw the very next ball to leave the Proteas reeling.

But South Africa hit back thanks to the efforts of McKenzie and Boucher.

And having successfully avoided the follow-on, Pollock then ate into England's advantage with some crisp hitting before becoming Anderson's fifth scalp.
