Gatting retired from professional football to pursue a cricket career

Joe Gatting has signed a two-year contract with Sussex, keeping him at Hove until the end of the 2010 season.

The 21-year-old batsman, who has played football for Brighton and Woking, is the son of footballer Steve Gatting and nephew of ex-England skipper Mike.

Gatting impressed during the winter and scored 110 against a strong Surrey side in a pre-season tour.

"It was the right time to call it a day on football and concentrate on cricket," he said.

"I am looking forward to what promises to be a very exciting season."

Gatting had represented Sussex academy and their second XI before embarking on a three-year football career.
