Sussex survived a final-over assault from Surrey to keep their Friends Provident Trophy hopes alive at Hove.

Sussex looked to be in the driving seat when long-serving Zimbabwean Murray Goodwin hit 144 in the home side's huge score of 313-7.

But the visitors were not beaten, getting as close as they did thanks to a stand of 154 in 29 overs between Michael Brown (66) and Scott Newman.

Newman eventually went for 130, Surrey finishing just two short on 311-6.

It was a disappointing return to Hove for former Sussex captain Chris Adams, who joined Surrey as cricket manager in December.

His underpowered bowling attack, minus the injured Andre Nel and Jade Dernbach, struggled to contain a rampant Goodwin.

He came in with Sussex 21-2 after Ed Joyce and Luke Wright had fallen to the new ball but was soon into his stride.

Goodwin offered one chance on 39 when he should have been caught behind off legspinner Chris Schofield.

But he cracked 16 fours and two huge leg-side sixes off Schofield and Afzaal in his ninth one-day hundred for Sussex.

That came off 99 balls before he accelerated to add another 44 from just 18 deliveries before holing out to the mid-wicket boundary.

Skipper Mike Yardy hit 59 in a fourth wicket stand of 135 in 24 overs before Rory Hamilton-Brown bludgeoned 43 off 30 balls to take the total past 300.

But it was far from all over, as Newman and Brown responded well.

Although Brown was bowled by Wright for 66, Newman powered on to make a one-day best 130.

The powerful left-hander struck 10 fours and three sixes and was trying to clear the rope again at long on when Joe Gatting, having dropped him on 111, this time held a juggling catch.

At that stage, Surrey needed 84 from 14 overs and still had a five-over powerplay in hand. But Sussex dragged it back with three wickets in 10 balls.

Needing 15 off the last over, Surrey were still in it to the final ball when they needed four to tie. But Grant Elliott could only drive to long on for two.
