Surrey have announced a pre-tax loss of £502,000 for the 2010 financial year. The club suffered a £5m fall in turnover to £20.5m and blamed poor ticket and hospitality sales during Pakistan's Test Match at the Oval. The match against England began on a Wednesday, and was closely followed by the Lord's Test. Chairman Richard Thompson said: "2010 was a difficult year across cricket in general, and all sports suffered a downturn in corporate hospitality." The club also said the football World Cup had affected crowd figures during the FP t20 competition. | We are confident that we've put in place measures that will return us to profit Surrey chairman Richard Thompson |
But Thompson predicted the club would post improved figures next year, adding: "We are beginning to see the market improve. "The start to the 2011 year has been one of the strongest for the club ever. "For the India Test and One Day International, we are tracking above an Ashes series which is unheard of. We are confident that we've put in place measures that will return us to profit." The Surrey loss is the latest in a series reported by the counties. Yorkshire, Lancashire, Kent and Warwickshire are among others to have recently reported losses.
