Surrey have named Richard Thompson as their new chairman. The 43-year-old replaces David Stewart, who has retired after seven and a half years in charge at The Oval. Thompson told the club's website: "I am honoured to be named chairman. David Stewart will be a tough act to follow and he is owed a great deal of thanks. "Despite a period without trophies, I am confident that with the players coming through, the foundations are in place for a period of success." Thompson's appointment makes him the youngest chairman of any of the 18 first-class counties and the youngest in Surrey's history. He continued: "Cricket is going through a period of great change. I will do all I can to help steer Surrey through those challenges and be a stronger club as a result." Stewart added: "It has been most enjoyable and a real privilege to have steered the club through such exciting and challenging times these last seven years. "I am convinced that Richard is the right person to lead the club through the next chapter in its rich history."
