Former England captain Alec Stewart has joined his old county Surrey as a coach in their new management team. Stewart, 45, retired six years ago having made 587 appearances in a 22-year stint at the Oval. He told the club's website: "I've been a Surrey man all my life and am relishing the opportunity to get back involved in cricket at the club." Stewart, who won 133 England Test caps, will coach batting and wicketkeeping part-time and act as a mentor. | The return of Alec Stewart to Surrey is as clear a statement of intent as you can get about the direction the club is travelling in Surrey managing director of cricket Gus Mackay |
Surrey announced at the end of last season that Chris Adams would replace Alan Butcher as manager, while Stewart's ex-England and Surrey team-mate Graham Thorpe has also been appointed as a batting coach. Stewart said: "We have some bright young talent on the staff and I hope I can help them bring out every drop of their ability to secure success for both Surrey and England over years to come." Stewart, who will continue in his role as ambassador for the club, will also act as a consultant to Adams and managing director of cricket Gus Mackay. Mackay said: "The return of Alec Stewart to Surrey is as clear a statement of intent as you can get about the direction the club is travelling in. "Under the powerful leadership of Chris Adams, I am confident that our cricket management team will be able to bring sustained success to Surrey and develop a legacy that will see the club prosper long into the future."
