Usman Afzaal played three Tests against Australian in 2001
Usman Afzaal hopes to earn an England recall by helping Surrey make an immediate return to Division One of the County Championship next season.
The left-hander, 31, played three Tests against Australia in 2001 and is targeting a big year at the Brit Oval.
Afzaal told BBC London 94.9: "If I can win games for Surrey then hopefully that will be noticed.
"I'm convinced if I'm doing what I can for Surrey at the best of my ability then people will acknowledge it."
Afzaal averaged 45.66 last season - scoring two centuries and seven 50s - as Surrey were relegated, and he hopes more runs in 2009 will help him push for an England call-up.
He added: "I've had a taste of it (Test cricket) and it's like having only half a cup of water when you're thirsty as hell - you still want to finish it off.
"I'm working hard, obviously runs are massively important, but it's about doing the best I can do for Surrey."
