De Bruyn top-scored for Somerset with 49 not out |
Somerset began their preparations for the Champions League Twenty20 competition in India with a comprehensive win over Otago Volts. The Sabres won by eight wickets after restricting the New Zealanders to just 126 with wickets from Ben Phillips (3) Alfonso Thomas (2) and Peter Trego (2). Arul Suppiah (45) and Zander de Bruyn (49no) were Somerset's top scorers. "It was a good all-round display with the bowlers showing real intent," coach Andy Hurry told BBC Radio Bristol. Somerset lost Justin Langer for 16 early on in Hyderabad, but De Bruyn came to the wicket and formed a productive stand with Suppiah. Somerset reached their target with five overs to spare. | Marcus will be joining us and we are planning on him playing in the warm-up game Somerset coach Andy Hurry |
"The way we've played our cricket has been very encouraging," said Hurry. "There's just a couple of areas we need to fine tune so we're ready for our big game against Deccan Chargers on Saturday." Somerset's next match is against a Hyderabad XI on Thursday and Hurry is able to select from a full squad including former England opener Marcus Trescothick. "Marcus will be joining us and we are planning on him playing in the warm-up game," he said. "We decided to rest Charl Willoughby with a view to selecting him for the Hyderabad game and then he'll be in contention for Saturday." The Chargers will prove a stern test for the Sabres as they include Australians Adam Gilchrist and Andrew Symonds along with India's VVS Laxman and New Zealander Scott Styris.
