Trescothick to take tour 'gamble'

Marcus Trescothick has revealed that his decision to tour abroad for the first time in three years is a risk.

The 33-year-old is in Somerset's Champions League Twenty20 squad that travels to India next month.

Trescothick quit international cricket in 2008 because of well-publicised depression and anxiety attacks which made it difficult to tour.

"I know the risk and I know what happens when it goes wrong," he told BBC World Service.

"In the last couple of times I have tried to go on tour it's failed, so of course [it is a risk].

"Let's try and break the tradition of what has happened over the last few times.

"I can only try. It's a big competition for the players and for the club. I have got to try and make it happen."

Trescothick, who was named the most valuable player for 2009 by the Professional Cricketers' Association this week, remains one of the finest English batsmen and is particularly adept in the shortest format.

He hit 56 from 32 balls in the semi-finals of the Twenty20 Cup to help beat Kent and ensure his team's passage to India. He added a similarly explosive 33 in the final, although it was not enough to prevent Sussex winning by 63 runs.

The trip to India will take him back to the country where his illness surfaced during a tour by England three years ago.

He initially felt his problems had been caused by physical and mental exhaustion brought on by England's gruelling schedule, plus the strain of missing his family.

But, as detailed in his autobiography, when he suffered from repeated shivering and sweating and broke down in front of Peter Gregory, then the England team doctor, he was aware it was something far more worrying.

He has not represented England since returning home early from the last Ashes tour to Australia in November 2006 before the first Test was played.

Trescothick later described his mood as "swinging wildly, between something approaching despair and spells when things wouldn't seem so awful".

He officially retired from international cricket in March 2008 after pulling out of Somerset's pre-season tour to Dubai at the last minute when found sobbing in a shop at Heathrow.

And he ruled out any possibility of an England comeback last month after being tipped for a call-up for the deciding Ashes Test.

Trescothick will be vice-captain of the 15-man squad, led by Justin Langer, and one idea being considered is for him to be based with his family in the United Arab Emirates and commute to the match venues.

That, Langer told BBC Sport, is part of the reason Trescothick and Somerset are confident he will be able to travel.

"The way he's played over his career and, in particular, over the last couple of years mean it is a huge boost to have his name on the team sheet, of course," said the former Australia opener.

"It'll be an ongoing decision for him. He has to ensure things are comfortable for him overseas and that his family will come with him to try to ease the burden."

The 38-year-old Langer added: "But right now he's really positive about coming, he's very hopeful. We've had plenty of discussions about it and at this stage that's why he's been named in the squad.

If at any time he feels the need to pull out we will understand

"He's determined to be there and help Somerset win what should be an unbelievable tournament."

However, Langer warned that a successful trip to India would not lead to Trescothick resuming an England career.

The left-hander retired from internationals last year, and Langer said: "My gut feeling - and you can only really ask him this - is that Marcus won't play international cricket again.

"I'm sure he dreams of it at times but my gut feeling, regardless of how this trip goes, is he won't ever play for England again. You can regard this as a one-off thing on that front."

The Taunton-based county and Sussex, who beat the Cidermen in this summer's Twenty20 Cup final, will be the two English teams involved in the Indian tournament.

Somerset's 15-man squad, which includes uncapped 18-year-old wicketkeeper Jos Buttler, will fly out in time for their first match against Deccan Chargers in Hyderabad on 10 October.

"It is his firm intention to make the trip. But we appreciate his situation and there are no guarantees," said director of cricket Brian Rose.

"If at any time he feels the need to pull out we will understand."

Somerset squad: Langer (capt), Trescothick, De Bruyn, Hildreth, Kieswetter (wk), Trego, Suppiah, Thomas, Waller, Willoughby, Durston, Turner, Banks, Phillips, Buttler.
