Newell glad to give skipper Chris Read a break

Chris Read
Read has been Notts skipper since April 2008

Nottinghamshire director of cricket Mick Newell is convinced wicketkeeper Chris Read will benefit from a break from leading the Twenty20 side.

Read will continue as captain in other forms of the game but David Hussey will take charge in their Twenty20 campaign.

Newell told BBC Radio Nottingham: "Let Chris continue be the best keeper in the world and someone else can captain.

"As a wicketkeeper perhaps there is too much on his plate so for three weeks Chris can switch his brain off a bit."

Newell said the workload on Read meant the decision to allow Hussey to ease the burden was a sensible one.

Twenty20 is the hardest type of cricket to captain if you are the wicketkeeper

"Captaining the team in four-day cricket and 40-over cricket is very arduous," Newell said.

"Chris gives up an awful lot of time on and off the field to do the job so for the duration of this competition he can just be wicketkeeper again.

"Twenty20 is the hardest type of cricket to captain if you are wicketkeeper because there are so many things to think about.

"I talked to Chris in the winter and suggested that this might be an option. He thought about it and he was happy to do that."
