England national selector Geoff Miller has told Samit Patel he will not play international cricket again until his fitness levels improve.

The Nottinghamshire all-rounder has not featured for England since being dropped from the one-day squad in March 2009 and warned about his weight.

And Miller told BBC East Midlands Today he was a long way off winning a recall for the tour of the UAE and Bangladesh.

"He wasn't considered. He knows what is required," Miller explained.

"He was given the message of the problems he was having. We explained to him and had many conversations with him but he's not out of the picture.

"If he can go and discipline himself and get himself ready for what is required in international cricket then we'll revisit, but the ball is in his court now and he has to go away and understand what is necessary.

"He's being helped all the time but it's a situation when you work on fitness that you have to help yourself.

"He's had the message delivered by me and the coach Andy Flower and the captain so he knows what is required and he must go away and do that."

Patel, who signed a new Notts contract earlier this month which keeps him at Trent Bridge until 2012, played 11 one-day internationals for England, all in 2008 under the captaincy of Kevin Pietersen.

He has been training at the Darren Lehmann academy in Adelaide, Australia to improve his fitness.
