Udal came out or retirement to join Middlesex |
Shaun Udal will captain Middlesex until the end of the 2010 season, the county confirmed at an end-of-season dinner. The 40-year-old spinner took on the role of full-time skipper at the conclusion of the 2008 campaign. Udal's young side have struggled in the County Championship and failed to defend the club's Twenty20 crown. But managing director of cricket Angus Fraser said: "In a difficult season, Shaun has responded manfully to the challenges laid in front of him." Speaking to the club website, Fraser added: "I look forward to working with him again in 2010." Udal announced his retirement in 2007 after a distinguished 20-year career with Hampshire, during which he represented England in four Test matches and 11 one-day internationals. The off-spinner was persuaded to come out of retirement by Middlesex. And, by the end of his first year had taken over as captain, replacing Ed Smith. In his second season at Lord's, Udal was included in England's provisional 30-man squad for the 2009 ICC World Twenty20, but missed out on a place in the final squad. At the club's end of season dinner, held at Lord's on Thursday evening, Tim Murtagh was named Middlesex Player of the Year for the third consecutive season. The 28-year-old former Surrey bowler finished with 60 Championship wickets, despite missing nearly three months of the season with a serious hamstring injury.
