Udal joined Middlesex earlier this year after deciding not to retire yet

Veteran spinner Shaun Udal wants to be named Middlesex captain next season.

The 39-year-old took over the captaincy towards the end of the domestic season and will lead the side in the Stanford Series and the Champions League.

The former Hampshire player told BBC London 94.9: "I'd love the opportunity to continue.

"Hopefully I'll continue to score runs and take wickets for Middlesex next year and the year after, I'd love to continue into 2010."

Udal had announced his retirement in 2008 before leaving Hampshire but signed for Middlesex on a two-year deal.

The Farnborough born off-spinner says talks have already begun with Middlesex chief executive about extending his contract.

He added: "I'm talking with Vinnie at the moment about extending the deal so hopefully that will be a formality that will be tied up soon.

"If it [the captaincy] was offered to me then I would love to do it. I would only take it on if I thought I could do a good job and I think I could.

"Hopefully whatever experiences they are going to go through I've been through already, so I can offer them help and advice.

"And hopefully inspire them on to be better crickets and inspire them to be the best cricket you can possibly be.

"Enjoy yourself off the pitch, fine, no problem with that at all but make sure that whatever you do when you walk on the pitch your mind is committed to playing cricket for the day."
