FRIENDS PROVIDENT TROPHY, GROUP B, The Grange Middlesex 280-4 beat Scotland 142 by 138 runs (Middlesex 2pts, Scotland 0pts)
Udal was tempted out of retirement by Middlesex before the 2008 season |
Shaun Udal rolled back the years with a fine all-round performance as Middlesex thrashed Scotland by 138 runs in their FP Trophy clash at The Grange. The 40-year-old smashed three sixes and five fours in an unbeaten 79 from only 46 balls as Middlesex posted 280-4. Eoin Morgan made 55, his third-straight score of 50 or more in the competition, while Owais Shah hit 42 and Nick Compton 44 before retiring hurt. Udal then took 3-32 as Scotland were rolled for 142, Ryan Watson making 47. The veteran off-spinner completely turned the game in Middlesex's favour after coming to the crease with his side at 128-3 in the 26th over. He shared a stand of 85 with Morgan and then an unbroken 67 with Neil Dexter, who bludgeoned 37 from 20 balls, as Middlesex stepped on the gas. But Udal and Dexter enjoyed some good fortune along the way as the Middlesex captain was dropped six times and the South Africa-born all-rounder twice as Scotland struggled in the field. Scotland's reply got off to the worst possible start when captain Gavin Hamilton was bowled by Chris Silverwood off the final ball of the first over. And after Watson was third out with the score on 78, there was little to stop Middlesex romping to a comprehensive win.
